Research and StudiesZero-G News - SpaceDaily Special Report Navy medicine takes on NASA for benefits Confusion Concerning Phototherapy and production of Free radicals Infrared Therapy is not Ultraviolet Therapy. Recent rumors concerning INFRARED Phototherapy's role-- as confused with the role of ULTRAVIOLET phototherapy---producing Free Radicals are unfounded and in fact, totally inconsistent with the facts. Two studies among others are cited: 1) Changes in Fibroblast Proliferation and Metabolism following in Vitro Helium Laser Irradiation. By: J. Rigau MD; M.A. Trelles MD.; R.G. Calderhead MD.; .E. Mayayo MD. Laser Therapy, Vol 3, No 1 Jan 1991 2) Low Level Laser Therapy: A Practical Introduction By T. Ohshiro and R.G. Calderhead Books: Wiley and Sons Current studies underway at several research centers such as the Medical College of Wisconsin are attempting the study the oxidation process associated with free radical production as produced with Ultraviolet--X-Ray radiation--Chemotherapy and other processes which add a burden to the oxidative stress to normal cellular detoxification systems. A casual observation of the oxidation process associated with all of the above would quickly determine that those processes have already been associated with deleterious effect on the bodies tissue. While Infrared is associated with healing effects and tissue building--such as increased Fibroblastic activity and enhanced muscle tone. Free radicals are generated by
the biochemical redox reactions that occur as part of normal cell metabolism,
and by exposure to environmental factors such UV light, cigarette smoke,
environmental pollutants and gamma radiation. Some toxic compounds can result
in the production of free radicals. Free radicals have been implicated in
numerous diseases.
